Where would you place consistency, in the quality of child care delivery, on a scale of 1 – 10? How much does it matter in the daily operations of your school?
How would you feel when a parent writes you a very lengthy mail querying certain parts of your health and safety policy? How would you respond when you read this very detailed mail, pointing our specific instances, when certain health and safety issues were overlooked? Think about it!
I bet that reading that kind of mail, would leave a bad taste in your mouth. It might disorganise you for the rest of the day! Imagine having to read this mail, on a day when you are in the middle of handling a very pressing issue that requires your full attention! I am almost sure that it would completely distract your focus.
Now, let’s look at some possible issues that the parent may have listed in the mail.
If a parent says, “I have noticed children coming out of the restroom with no one reminding them to wash their hands; and children picking up toys and putting in their mouths, with no one telling them to bring the toys out. My child had fever in school and the other had runny tummy, and nobody thought to call me?” What do you think your response or those of your teachers will be when confronted with the question?
I guess you would probably hear something in the lines of, “That happened only once!” ONLY ONCE, can cause a school to have a bad reputation; only once; can cause a school to lose children; only once, can make parents lose confidence in your school, staff team and the services you provide. Only once can cause a lot of damage!
Just one time, of not cleaning a child’s nose; not reminding a child to wash his hands, not asking a child to pull out a toy from his mouth, not remembering to send home a child’s water bottle, not writing in the communication book , notifying the parent that a child threw up, not filling the minor incident form nor informing the parent that her child had an injury, not calling to find out how a sick child is doing, not being able to account for why a child has a bump on the head, not noticing when a child spilled bleach on his short, telling a parent lightly, that her child sprayed air freshener on his hair, and many more, can lead to one parent, spreading a terrible message about the services you’ve tried so hard to provide. In fact, just one time of omitting to do what you normally would do every other day, can have a huge effect on the school.
How much allowance can you give? What are you willing to permit to happen only once? Think about it!
